  • Would You Recognize Abuse of an Adult With Disabilities?

Health care professionals have long been on the lookout for child abuse. More recently, elder abuse has come onto the radar screen as well.  But did you know that the Illinois Adult Protective Services Act also requires health care practitioners to report suspected abuse, neglect, financial exploitation, or self-neglect of adults age 18-59 who are disabled?

The latest installment in ISMIE Mutual's series of "Lessons from the Field" deals with all three topics, including case studies and links to a variety of resources to help you protect your most vulnerable patients.

Your conscience already tells you that recognizing and reporting abuse is a critical part of your calling. As a mandated reporter, it is important that you are also aware of the legal issues involved - or you could be exposing yourself and your practice to increased liability risk.

For more information, view Lesson 13: Mandated Reporting of Abuse and Neglect. To report suspected elder abuse, neglect, or financial exploitation, call the appropriate statewide 24-hour hotline:

    • Adult Protective Services Hotline: 866-800-1409 (TTY: 888-206-1327)
    • Child Abuse Hotline: 800-25-ABUSE (TTY: 800-358-5117)

  • Notice to Internet Explorer Users

Internet Explorer (IE) remains the most popular web browser for most ISMIE policyholders. In fact, 57% of www.ismie.com site visits come through IE. Among IE users, the majority use version 11, which was released in 2013.  However, we are aware that some visitors still use older versions for web viewing.

If you are among those users, we urge you to install the free IE upgrade, or switch to an alternate browser (such as Firefox or Chrome), to make sure you are able to fully access ISMIE web content.

The ISMIE Mutual web site is best viewed in Internet Explorer version 10 or higher. Using an outdated version will likely result in difficulty logging in and limited access to site content. IE 8, for example, was released over six years ago, and Microsoft has announced they will no longer support it after 2015.

If you are running an outdated version of Internet Explorer and need to update, click here.

If you have questions about which web browsers work best with ISMIE online or need assistance accessing your policyholder information online, please contact us toll-free 888-476-7776 or email  onlinehelp@ismie.com.
