  • ISMIE’s 40 Years of Physician Advocacy Help Reverse Trial Lawyer-Friendly Law

government buildingISMIE policyholders, take a moment to celebrate an important – and all too rare – victory for legal fairness in Illinois.

In a 5-0 decision, the Illinois Supreme Court struck down a law imposing a six-person limit on the size of civil juries. It all began two years ago in the final hours of the Quinn administration, with the then-governor’s signature on legislation delivering smaller panels to a grateful plaintiffs’ bar.

What’s wrong with small juries? They tend to be less diverse, less deliberative and more likely to deliver higher-than-average awards. Thanks to ISMIE’s tireless legislative and legal advocacy in fighting against this unfair law, in partnership with the Illinois State Medical Society, the right to a 12-member civil jury has been restored in the Land of Lincoln.

ISMIE is proud to be No. 1 in Illinois in market share and growing nationwide, with our superior medical liability coverage, unparalleled claims service and industry leading risk management education and services.

But there’s one more strength ISMIE provides policyholders that our competitors can’t match: 40 years of experience fighting for medical professionals in Illinois. That’s true whether we’re arguing for legal fairness or for our policyholders in the courtrooms of one of the nation’s most volatile legal systems.

ISMIE helped bring this matter before Illinois’ highest court – and we all won.

  • Watch Your Mail: ISMIE’s Prescription Take-Back Kit Helps Your Patients Safely Dispose of Potentially Dangerous Medications

A patient calls or comes in wondering what to do with a bag of unused prescriptions or expired over-the-counter drugs. Or during a visit, they volunteer that they have leftover painkillers at home, one of the leading drivers of the nation’s current opioid epidemic.

Unless you are a licensed collector, you can’t accept those medications.

But you can still help your patients.

To mark the next National DEA Prescription Drug Take-Back Day on October 22, ISMIE and the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) have put together a handy, year-round resource kit so you and your staff can educate patients about safe medication disposal. It includes:

    • A two-sided poster: Side One promotes DEA Take-Back Day on October 22, and Side Two promotes year-round steps for safe disposal;
    • A wallet/purse-sized patient card summarizing those steps; and
    • A copy of ISMS’ latest Issue Brief detailing physician and patient roles in disposal of unused medications.

If you are an ISMIE policyholder, watch the mail for your kit.

  • New ISMIE Case Study: Triaging E-Communications

Do you have a plan in place for handling patient phone calls at your practice? Good.

How about emails, texts on handheld devices, or patient messages that come in through your EHR practice portal?

    Not sure?

Make time to read our latest “Lessons from the Field” on E-communications.

The case study focuses on a serious patient emergency and the consequences of not having necessary protocols in place for all forms of patient communication. This lesson also includes guidance for documenting these communications, tips about things you should never text or email a patient, and resources for developing policies and procedures.
