  • All Illinois Controlled Substance Prescribers MUST Register in the State’s Prescription Monitoring Program by Jan. 1

controlled substance folderLast week, Gov. Rauner signed legislation requiring all Illinois controlled substance license holders to register in the Illinois Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP) by January 1, 2018.

All prescribers will also now be required to access the PMP before writing an initial prescription for a Schedule II narcotic, such as an opioid, though some exceptions apply.

ISMIE recommends that you encourage all controlled substance license holders at your practice go to www.ilpmp.org to register before this Friday, December 29, the last full workday of the year when live help is available. If you’re having problems with this process, contact the PMP directly at 217-524-1311 or by email.

Due to call volume, there have been intermittent reports of the line not accepting new messages.

For background, we invite you to watch the latest ISMS webinar on Illinois’ PMP, and for general questions, call 800-782-4767 or send an email.

  • ‘A Personal Decision’ Can Help Patients and Their Families Discuss Medical Wishes as They Gather for the Holidays

A Personal Decision pamphlet coverA reminder: Medicare now reimburses for advance care planning counseling. Here’s a great resource you can share with patients if they’re visiting with family through the holidays.

Our partners at the Illinois State Medical Society (ISMS) created “A Personal Decision” as an easy-to-understand guide to the legal issues and documentation necessary in Illinois to confirm one’s end-of-life health care preferences. While not a substitute for individualized advice from a legal or qualified personal advisor, this booklet offers both practical guidance and examples of necessary forms for Illinois patients to document their choices.

While ISMS members can request up to 300 free print copies per year, ISMIE policyholders who aren’t ISMS members may purchase this resource at money-saving bulk rates. ISMS also makes the booklet available as a free download for single copies.

ISMIE also offers other advance care planning guidance to policyholders through ISMIE’S risk management resource library.
