  • Thinking About MACRA Changes and How They'll Affect Your Practice? Bookmark This Material

checkmarkThe Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released a 900-page proposed rule to implement key provisions of the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act of 2015 (MACRA) as of Jan. 1, 2017.

These changes, in whatever final form they take, will significantly affect the way your medical professionals care for Medicare patients and the compensation your practice receives for that care.

While many medical leaders - including the Illinois State Medical Society - have concerns and are preparing a formal response to the rule, practice managers should consider requesting or bookmarking the following resources to evaluate how your own processes may change:

  • Make Sure Your Patient Records Processes Are Up to Date With This New ISMIE Resource

MedicalRecords"Individual and Third-Party Access to Medical Records," a new ISMIE resource, explains the latest guidance from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) on medical record copying and delivery fees and individuals' access to protected health information.

The HHS guidance may significantly impact how you and your physicians understand the timeliness requirements for fulfilling medical record requests and limitations on what fees can be charged to provide those records. This essential resource includes a helpful FAQ offering specific situational guidance for physicians and office staff.

Practice management professionals can request a copy of this guide by e-mailing communications@ismie.com.

  • New Federal OT Rules May Bring Big Changes to Your Payroll - Are You Prepared?

payrollLast month, the federal government nearly doubled the salary level that qualifies workers for overtime, an eye-opening development for most practice managers and their teams. Starting December 1, the U.S. Department of Labor's (DOL) final rule on overtime will automatically set a new overtime pay threshold of $47,476 a year. Those making less than this threshold will automatically be eligible for overtime pay if they work more than 40 hours a week.

In detail, the new rule will:

    • Raise the salary threshold for OT pay from $455 per week to $913 ($47,476 per year).
    • Automatically update the salary threshold every three years based on wage growth over time.
    • Strengthen overtime protections for salaried workers already entitled to overtime.
    • Provide greater clarity for workers and employers.

The DOL has provided suggestions for those employers who do not wish to pay overtime, raise employee salaries or reduce overtime hours. For all complex labor issues like this one, practices should consult with private counsel. In the meantime, check these DOL webpages for more information:

  • 2017 Is an Illinois Medical License Renewal Year - Make Sure Your Physicians Have Their IDFPR Information Up to Date

Earlier this year, the Illinois Department of Financial & Professional Regulation (IDFPR) announced a switch to a paperless licensing system. Physicians should take note because 2017 is a medical license renewal year.

Consider reminding your doctors that having their primary email address in the database is particularly important - missing an IDFPR notice can lead to financial penalties and the risk that they'll miss their renewal deadline. Your physicians will have to visit two areas of the IDFPR website to check and update their information:

    • Contact information: To confirm or update their latest contact information, physicians will need sign in at the "Address Change - Lookup" page and type in the information requested. This is the page associated with their medical license. Illinois law requires IDFPR notification when any contact information changes, so encourage your physicians to make sure their information is current.

    • Professional profile information: IDFPR maintains a separate database for the information that displays through the physician profile page, which is viewable by the general public. Your physicians need to sign in to the "Profession Profile Update" page to make any changes to the required or optional sections of their profile. Here are examples of the data your doctors will need for each:

      1. Required: Primary office location; hospital affiliations; program information for Medicare and Medicaid; board certification; and medical school and post-graduate education data.

      2. Optional: Any additional office locations, previous practice locations, insurance plans, professional positions, affiliations, publications, honors, awards and community activities.

For questions, the IDFPR's main number is 888-473-4858. For email inquiries, write FPR.LMU@Illinois.gov.

  • ISMIE is 40!

ISMIE40On July 1, 1976, a group of concerned Illinois physicians facing the loss of their medical liability coverage did what many thought impossible. They gambled their financial and professional futures on a long shot called the Illinois State Medical Inter-Insurance Exchange - today known as ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company.

Today, ISMIE is the only medical liability carrier to have operated consistently in Illinois throughout the past four decades.

We thank you and your other practice leaders for your business as ISMIE celebrates our 40th anniversary!
