Beyond the Basics: Advanced Communications for Physicians and Other Clinicians - Rosemont

May 8, 2018: 9:00am - 12:00pm

This live event will take place at the The Westin O'Hare, 6100 N. River Road, Rosemont, IL 60018.

Patients and families often come to the medical encounter with preferences – and even demands – regarding the medications, tests, referrals and other procedures that they need and want. The likelihood of dissatisfaction, conflict and nonadherence rises quickly when the patient is not sufficiently persuaded that an alternative to their preference is an effective and safe option. This can result in physicians or other clinicians feeling forced to cave in to inappropriate demands and expectations in order to achieve higher patient satisfaction scores or simply to cut short an uncomfortable conversation and move on to the next patient. Additionally, such patients are frequently left with the perception that their treating physician or other clinician is stubborn and unwilling to consider other perspectives. It’s no surprise, then, that these interactions can help pave the way toward a professional liability lawsuit, particularly in the face of a disappointing outcome.

In this workshop, we will offer a model of principled negotiation that can help participants successfully navigate situations in which the physician or other clinician and the patient must reach a mutually agreed upon treatment plan, while simultaneously preserving the relationship. Time will be spent applying this model to common clinical situations, practicing language that is more understandable and acceptable to patients, and framing discussions to more efficiently and respectfully reach a treatment plan that – in the end – everyone can be satisfied with.
