Remembering Harold L. Jensen, MD


redbackground(rounded)Harold L. Jensen, MD, chairman of ISMIE Mutual Insurance Company, passed away suddenly May 22, 2017.

Appointed to the position in 1991, ISMIE’s third chairman oversaw a tumultuous era in Illinois’ medical liability environment, but guided industry-leading innovations in risk management education, the creation of ISMIE’s popular dividend program and the planning of ISMIE’s current nationwide expansion. blurred(rounded)

Throughout, Dr. Jensen advocated tirelessly for legal fairness and balance in Illinois courtrooms, a battle that continues today. ISMIE Vice Chairman Paul H. DeHaan, MD, described Dr. Jensen as a “consummate physician advocate,” adding, “Chief among his goals was improving the way Illinois courts handled medical liability. He spoke out on the negative impact of our state’s hostile lawsuit climate on physicians and, most importantly, on patients’ access to medical care.”

blackandwhite(rounded)As the helm of the nation’s 10th largest medical liability insurer, Dr. Jensen became the longest-serving chairman in ISMIE history. An internist, Dr. Jensen was born in Minnesota and made his home in south suburban Frankfort. After serving in the U.S. Army, he earned his undergraduate degree in clinical psychology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and his medical degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago.

redtie(rounded)After completing his residency at Illinois Central Hospital, Dr. Jensen was a longtime medical staff member at Ingalls Memorial Hospital in Harvey, where he also served as the hospital’s vice president of medical affairs, as chair of the Department of Medicine and as medical staff president. Dr. Jensen was also on the medical staff of South Suburban Hospital in Hazel Crest, now part of the Advocate system.
